Air Travel

There are two airports close to the George R. Brown Convention Center. William P Hobby Airport offers national flights and George Bush Intercontinental Airport offers both local and international connections.

William P. Hobby Airport (TX-HOU)

William P. Hobby Airport, Houston’s secondary major commercial airport, is located 10 miles from the George R. Brown Convention Center.

SuperShuttle

SuperShuttle is a shared-ride service that transports travelers to and from private addresses, offices or hotels. It takes longer than a taxi because these shuttles pick up passengers at multiple locations, but it is often more affordable, especially if you are traveling alone. Private limousines are also available. Pickup for SuperShuttle at Hobby Airport is at Curb Zone 12B.

Taxis are available at Curb Zone 3 outside of the baggage claim area on the lower level.

Rental Cars

See a list of rental car companies who operate out of Hobby Airport. Rental car shuttles are available at Curb Zones 1A and 1B (closest to the terminal).

Courtesy Vans

Various hotels and lodgings offer courtesy vans to their properties. You can use the courtesy telephones in the baggage claim area to request a pickup. Hotel shuttles pickup passengers at Curb Zone 9B.

Public METRO buses

See Public METRO buses for schedules and routes. Service runs Monday through Sunday, from approximately 5 a.m. until midnight.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

George Bush Intercontinental Airport is Houston’s largest airport and is located 21 miles from the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Getting Around Downtown

Public

Rail System*

METRORail offers convenient accessible service within the heart of the city between downtown Houston and NRG Park, including the Museum District.

*You can purchase a day pass for use on METRORail and METRO buses for just $3 a day. 

Bus System 

METRO buses run mostly on city streets, stopping at every other corner along their routes. One-way fare is $1.25.

Park & Ride is for long-distance commuting. METRO’s 28 Park & Ride lots provide bus service to key destinations in the service area. One-way fare ranges from $2 to $4.50, depending on distance.

Jitney Service

The Wave

A hybrid between a taxi/limo and public bus, the jitney service that shuttles folks around Houston’s primary nightlife areas, including Midtown, Montrose, Downtown, Uptown, Rice Village and the Washington Avenue corridor. There are a number of ways to catch the wave: along its route, call to see when and where the Wave will be arriving or pick it up at a designated free parking lot (southwest corner of Houston and Memorial Pkwy. and at Pizzitola’s on Shepherd). The Wave also offers private rentals with a concierge service.

Private

Taxis 

Six in the City: $6 Anywhere – Flat taxi fare of $6 for all trips in the downtown area. This $6 fare will apply anywhere within the Central Business District, bounded by Interstate 45, Interstate 10 and U.S. 59.

Ride-Sharing Services

Uber & Lyft – Houston was the first city in Texas to approve ride-sharing services including Uber and Lyft. These alternative transportation companies allow users to request a ride via smartphone apps.

Rental Cars 

Rental Car Agencies – Houston has a fleet of 30,000 rental cars with every major rental car company represented.

Auto Exotic Rental – Looking for something on the higher-end or sporty to rent?

Zipcar – Zipcar allows users to rent a nearby car when they need access to it. Over 25 Zipcars are available for rent at 10 locations throughout Houston – primarily in the downtown, midtown and Greenway Plaza areas.

Low-Cost Bike Share

B-Cycle Program – Houston’s B-Cycle program has 21 racks stretching from Downtown to the Museum District. The bike-share program allows member users to checkout cruiser-style bikes free of charge for up to an hour and just $2 for each additional ½ hour.

Free Transportation in Downtown Houston

Greenlink Buses – Seven buses operate in Downtown Houston Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., about 7-10 minutes apart. The route spans 2.5 miles with 18 stops and connects Metro transit stops, the convention corridor, hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment.
