Dr. Joanne McGrath Cohoon is a sociologist with the rank of Full Professor in the University of Virginia’s department of Engineering & Society. She has researched the gender imbalance in computing for almost twenty years, and put this knowledge into practice, particularly through her work with the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT). As a Senior Research Scientist for NCWIT, Cohoon promotes diversity and equity by improving the practices of institutions that educate and employ computing professionals. In other words, she works to change the system, not the women.
