Barbara Birungi founded WITU (Women in Technology Uganda) in 2010.  WITU encourages, inspires, and trains women in tech through networking, training, mentoring and partnering to increase the participation of women in tech and improve the livelihoods of women in Uganda. Its “CODE GIRLS” program introduces technology and career guidance to school drop outs, high school and university girls. WITU has taught over 500 young girls and has helped more than 100 women find tech jobs.

Barbara is also the executive director of Hive Colab in Uganda, a business accelerator and incubator for East African startups. Their mission is to create a collaborative environment that promotes experimentation of scalable ideas with positive social and economic returns.Barbara has led this technology hub since its inception in 2010. Prior to this, she also worked for Appfrica International, an innovative global consultancy specializing in market research studies, custom technology solutions, and investment in emerging markets.

Barbara graduated with honors in a Bachelors degree in Business Computing from Makerere University and received a postgraduate degree in Project Planning and Management. As  a student at Makerere she volunteered at an orphanage,  teaching basic ICT skills and career guidance to high school students, many of whom are now tech professionals. She is an enthusiast of ICT4D, innovation, and women and girls in Uganda, and has mentored and taught more than 300 young girls.
