Recap: The Final Day of a Record-Breaking Grace Hopper Celebration

As GHC 2015 came to a close on Friday, Houston was abuzz with excitement for the evening’s festivities. Here’s a quick look at some of the highlights of the day:

The day kicked off with a keynote presentation from Manuela Veloso, the Herbert A. Simon Professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Manuela discussed the research she’s conducted on robots in collaborative networks communicating with humans and themselves.

“Technology is about diversity,” Manuela said. “You don’t have to do everything, but some do things that others can’t.” She pointed out that when some of her robot assistants can’t navigate around obstacles, they send her emails asking for help!

Another highlight of day 3 at GHC was at the LGBTQ Luncheon, where Houston Mayor Annise Parker made a special stop to give remarks on her technology journey and her love for the city of Houston.

The day wrapped up with an afternoon plenary session focused on the importance on diversity in technology, featuring Janet George and Isis Anchalee. Audiences were also treated to a special performance from iLuminate, a dance show featuring wearable wireless lighting suits. The final celebration continued through the night at a dance party for all GHC attendees at Minute Maid Park.
