#GHC16: Things to Do in Houston

One of the greatest things about living in the fourth largest U.S. city is there’s always something to do. I’m excited to share some unique Houston experiences you should check out if you happen to be in the city after GHC.

The Houston Museum District consists of 19 museums divided into four walkable zones aimed at promoting art, history, science and culture. Notable stops are Rothko Chapel, the Menil Collection, Lawndale Art Center, the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston and the Houston Zoo.

While in the area, take a stroll through Hermann Park and hang out by the reflection pool or visit the Centennial Gardens. The Orange Show Monument, Beer Can House and Art Car Museum showcase Houstonian creativity while the Eclectic Menagerie Park serves as home to massive steel monsters.

If you’re a fan of bats — the flying creature kind — be sure to visit the Bat Bridge Colony off Waugh for a sight unlike any other. Hang out around sunset to see groups of bats take flight.

Not a fan of things that fly in the night? Not to worry. Built in 1926, The Cistern at Buffalo Bayou Park used to be a former drinking water reservoir. Decommissioned in 2007 due to an irreparable leak and recently opened to the public, it serves as one of the coolest underground places in the city. Pro tip: purchase your tickets online and in advance since weekends tend to sell out.

There’s also the Down Periscope you can visit that sits atop the cistern which allows you to peer inside. David Adickes is known for the large statues he sculpts. As a matter of fact, giant heads of past presidents often litter his studio. One of his more recent works of art is the I heart Houston sign located near Interstate 10 and Patterson. It can be seen while driving on the freeway. We just hope you aren’t stuck in traffic when you see it.

If you are interested in giving your wallet a workout visit the Houston Galleria for some shopping. Fan of vintage styles that never go out of fashion? Head over to 19th Street in the Heights for an array of shops decked out in decade dress spanning the 40’s to the 90’s. The Place Upstairs is a boutique located above the Continental Club filled with bizarre bits and bobs perfect for the weird late night shopping experience you never knew you could have.

Of course the ultimate out of this world experience you could have is at NASA. If you can swing it, take the level 9 tour which gives you the ultimate behind the scenes look at NASA. When you decide to come back down to earth- drive over for some good ole Texas BBQ at Killens. Whatever you choose to do, we hope you enjoy your time in Houston!
