Academic Programs at GHC 17

GHC 17 is almost here! Our academic partners (NCWIT, ACM-W, and CRA-W) have helped us create great content for both faculty and students. Our academic programs will help you find ways of furthering your career as well as increasing diversity in computer science departments. You’ll also get the chance to hear your peers present on research in your field. See what opportunities we have to offer.

Students

The Student Opportunity Lab is an interactive session where students can seek personalized advice and gain the tools they need to achieve their career goals. We will have around 80 presenters, each with a unique topic, who will hold several mini sessions at their own tables. Attendees will switch tables every 20 minutes, giving them the opportunity to listen to multiple subjects. Find the topics and speakers that interest you the most.

We also have a number of CRA-W Sessions aimed specifically at graduate students, senior graduate students, and undergraduates considering graduate school. Learn how to thrive in graduate school, build a professional network, and explore the range of jobs available. See the full list of sessions and speakers here.

Make sure to visit our Student Lounge, a fun, interactive space where students can gather between sessions. The Student Lounge will be open all three days of the celebration for students to convene, mingle, and relax.

Faculty

Want to increase diversity in your computer science department? Attend Academic Corner! Part one of this program is organized by NCWIT, ACM-W, and CRA-W, and will have experts in the fields of higher education and computing discuss best practices for recruiting diverse faculty. The second part of this program will focus on BRAID (Building, Recruiting, And Inclusion for Diversity), a national initiative led by AnitaB.org and Harvey Mudd College. Our BRAID Research team will talk about their findings and how we are increasing the representation of women and underrepresented minority students in undergraduate computing.

Our CRA-W Sessions offer plenty of other important topics for faculty, from effective teaching tactics to starting your own research program. These sessions will help you further your own career as well as the careers of your students. See the full list of sessions and speakers here.

Other faculty sessions will also be available throughout GHC, including a presentation from our 2009 Denice Denton Emerging Leader ABIE Award Winner Nadya Mason. Check out our GHC 17 schedule and filter by audience type to see all the faculty sessions.

Need to take a break? Come to the Faculty Lounge, where you can catch up on work, grab a snack, and informally network with other faculty and academic staff. The Faculty Lounge will be open throughout the celebration for all academic attendees.

All Academics

GHC Scholars — who hail from across the U.S. and more than 50 countries — receive scholarships that cover GHC registration, meals, and travel expenses. Scholars get the chance to meet at the GHC Scholar Networking Reception, where they can participate in a personal development activity, and receive individualized advice from mentors in academia, national labs, and industry.

If you are a researcher, or a graduate student or faculty member involved with research, come to our Researcher’s Lunch. You’ll be able to meet and network with other researchers from academia, labs, and industry. At this year’s Researcher’s Lunch, women roboticists from the Toyota Research Institute will discuss how they combine their expertise in software, machine learning, manipulation, and user experience design to solve open interdisciplinary research questions.

At our Poster Session, participants informally present their research projects to experts in their fields. The Poster Session includes both General Presentations as well as the ACM Student Research Competition. You can see all of the posters in the Expo Hall during all three days of the celebration. The poster presenters will be there to explain their posters on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come see what the next generation of technological innovators is dreaming up.

We can’t wait to see you at GHC 17!
